New Milton Mayor Plants Platinum Tree
New Milton Town Mayor, Cllr Keith Craze, and his consort Cllr Madalaine Craze, were delighted to assist in the planting of an ornamental Tulip Tree (Liriodendron Tulipfera) this week, in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The Tulip Tree, renowned for its majestic form and unique beauty, is a welcome addition to the Recreation Ground which already boasts a wide selection of park trees, as well as heritage oaks on the southern boundary. The Tulip Tree will bear beautiful yellow-coloured tulip-shaped flowers in summer and glowing golden leaves in autumn.
Planting the Tulip Tree, marks the start of a special year of jubilee events in New Milton, which include a Town Council Civic Service in May, community street parties, musical performances on the Recreation Ground, and a Lions-led street party and entertainment on the clifftop.
Contributing to the Queen’s Green Canopy Project is another key aim of the Council this year intending to plant over 40 trees in the town’s green spaces.
These trees will be recorded on the Project database and map Map – The Queen’s Green Canopy (queensgreencanopy.org)
Cllr Keith Craze, New Milton Town Mayor and Council Chairman said “Although only a single tree, both its summer blooms and its almost tulip shape will be enjoyed by many and this planting marks the continuance of the Town Council’s drive to plant as many trees in suitable venues in the Town to aid improving the environment”.
“Her Majesty ascended to the Throne just over 70 years ago and here we are years later with her as our Monarch now celebrating this historic reign, the longest in British history. “Being thankful” is an oft ill-used phrase when describing an event or a person’s behaviour or presence. Today and throughout this year our celebrations project the deep-feeling of thanks we owe Her Majesty who is rightly revered throughout this country and the world.”
This year’s upcoming Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations and events will be posted on the Town Council website www.newmiltontowncouncil.gov.uk and the community website www.newmilton.net.
